What are the advantages of using a (Windows) Terminal Server and thin clients instead of using a normal Server and full clients? So far I've only really used normal servers and clients, but now customers ask about terminal Server, and I'd like to know pro's and con's of using them instead of an "old-fashioned" client-server network.

A Terminal Server is the server that hosts Windows-based programs or the full Windows desktop for Terminal Services clients. Users can connect to Terminal Server to run programs, to save files, and to use network resources on that server. It is a separate client software preinstalled on the server and other client OSes to connect and use terminal services.

It provides a display device, keyboard and mouse and basic processing power in order to interact with the server. Client Access Licenses: Connecting to a RDS Server also requires licenses in the form of Per User or Per Device Client Access Licenses, this is what allows more than a single user to remote into the server. Although you will still need to purchase licenses, buying CALs is way cheaper than buying everyone a new Windows 7 license.

I am trying to find a solution that will still allow the attachments to be emailed from the programs -- perhaps some a very lightweight email/SMTP client? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Terminal servers allow remote access to applications using thin-client technology. This makes the user’s machine act as a terminal emulator (similar to the concept of a dumb terminal). The user connects to the terminal server using client software installed on their machine, logs on to the Terminal Services session, and is presented with a user interface (normally a Windows Server 2003 desktop).
